4 Easy Ways To Learn Outside The Classroom

I was not a classroom nerd. I never wanted to be.

It was my mother who wished me to be like my sister, Sonakshi. I could not agree more that my sister was more intelligent and dear to the teachers, and my mother, like everyone’s mother, beat me up to study. Thank God that I took science after passing higher secondary and was left to study my own.

The next two years were cheering and equally enlightening. I was my own master. I did not have to write the diary at the end of the day, nor was I in a compulsion to recite the facts of history, poems and lessons of Hindi and English to my mother.

Though later Neeraj Sir took the charge of the subject – English – and treated the whole class in a way my mother did. He was a tough master. His hand banged the face like a hammer on an iron piece. There was no escape. You had to study. Do or die, was his motto.

Anyway, whatever I say about him, he developed my interest in English. I learned: it is often tough people, be it a teacher or a coach that drive you outside your comfort zone. Recalling the apt words of Henry Adams, “A teacher affects eternity. He can never tell where his influence stops.”

Coming back to the discussion, nothing can substitute the education received by the teacher. However, it does not matter from what source you receive the education as long as you are exploring your unique abilities and untapped powers. Moreover, if you are like me, not a classroom nerd, you can educate yourself in the following four easy ways.

1. Get Your Best Outfit

When I used to study, I was in my best outfit – I’m talking about self-motivation here. Without self-motivation, I couldn’t have made it so far.

There might be students in your class who perform better than you. Perhaps they are more intelligent and solve the questions in a blink of an eye. But you don’t have to lose the motivation.

I have seen people with self-confidence falling down in over-confidence. Moreover, it’s always intrinsic motivation that lifts you up in studies and life.

In a span of 3-4 months, even a motivated dunce can beat an intelligent student having a low level of motivation.

What you can start learning outside your classroom is to find different ways to stay motivated. Motivation and willpower are like the battery of your mobile phone, which goes on reducing throughout the day. It’s necessary to charge them every now and then.

Above all, if you are motivated you will be able to digest more information in less amount of time.

Everyone has his own way of finding motivation. The sooner you find your motivation, the better.

2. The Rule of Association

Perhaps you’re finding difficulty in memorizing some facts or formulas. If so, associating the difficult information with the weird imagination can be very helpful. That kind of imagination which can make you laugh off your stomach.

Human beings have an unlimited reserve of creativity. The more creative you become associating difficult subjects, the sooner you will be able to recall the information at the examination.

I usually go with the method of deep study. Every time I read a piece of information, I ask myself “How is it possible?” then I go on surfing the internet to find the root of the information.

For instance, years ago I was studying Feminism (an idea where woman share their concern against the patriarchal system of the society) and I came across the word “Misogamist”. I spent a few minutes on the internet and found similar words:

Misogamist = a person who hate marriage

Misanthrope = a person who hate human beings

Misogynist = a misanthrope who dislikes women in particular

Misology = the one who shows hatred in logic and reasoning; it was first mentioned by Plato in his works to express that all type of debates and arguments are of no use.

You see how I improved my vocabulary by studying in-depth. Deep study develops permanent knowledge, though it can be time-consuming. If you have leisure hours, try an in-depth study. Believe me, it’s fun.

3. Vision Your Material Again And Over Again

In short, I want you to revise your study material.

Our mind stores information in bits. It takes time to create impression on the mind. If you are not revising your study material, forget about getting good grades.

The word “revision” has meaning in itself —re + vision. It’s difficult to go through the material for the first time, but on your fifth or sixth revision, you will have the entire study material on your tips. Remember, practice makes things permanent.

4. Sail Your Boat With Strongest Hand

I take you back to my school days. When I was in sixth class, an Omnibus loaded with books arrived at school. All the students were allowed to purchase what interest them. I bought the title Aladdin AndHis Magic Lamp. It cost me thirty rupees. I read the whole book in less than a week. Of course, at that time I didn’t know I was a good reader. However, now I look back I find that the moment I purchased the book, the writ of fate was written down.

The interest in reading not only helped me to understand the subjects in a better way but also led me where I’m today.

Perhaps you are good at memorizing facts or excellent in taking down notes or skimming throughout the pages or maybe you learn through debates and group study. I have friends who are good listeners and listen to the audio lectures day in day out.

Every student has an unexceptional ability through which s/he can reduce the burden of studies to half. The good news is deep within, you know what extraordinary quality you possess. What you all need is to get aware of those superhuman powers.

Take Away

Concluding, we’ve discussed how:

Staying motivated can help you in delivering better performance

Associating and studying in-depth can benefit you in remembering difficult facts

Revising the study material helps in storing the information permanently

Finding your one strong ability can drive you overcoming the hurdles of studies

Before leaving, I respectfully want to ask you — What you want to take away from this post? How are you going to model the lessons you’ve just read into your own life?
